How can I get my cell phone to work without the SIM card?

Short answer: If your phone uses SIM cards, you can't do it. Long answer: On GSM phones (AT&T/Cingular and T-Mobile/Aerial are the big GSM carriers in the US, and most phones outside the US and Canada use GSM), SIM cards are used to identify the user. They store the user's phone number, phone book, and assorted info that makes the phone work. Without a SIM card, the phones have no "identity" and don't know what network to connect to, or who to connect as. On the flip side, if you wanna get a new phone, you can just pop the SIM card into the new phone, and it should work. CDMA/1X phones (big carriers: SpinCo Wireless (Sprint and Nextel)*, Virgin, Verizon, and Alltel**) don't use SIM cards. Don't try and stuff a SIM card somewhere in a CDMA phone. It won't do anything, and depending on how hard you try, you might mess up your phone. *SpinCo isn't the final name; also, Nextel doesn't use CDMA but after they merged with Sprint, they plan to convert their networks to CDMA **I think Alltel is CDMA1X. Not entirely sure though.

GSM is much older and is more widely used. iDEN however was founded recently by nextel, integrated into boost and adopted by telus, and southern linc. iDEN cellphones will accept a GSM SIM if the phone is unlocked, if it is not it will reject. but even if the phone does accept a GSM SIM it will only allow you to use the basic features of the phone such as camera, etc. if you wish to make calls you must have an iDEN SIM card.

question is, if you have a camera phone or an mp3 phone, or worst one with both features on it and it is a GSM quad-band phone, how do you use these features without the SIM card? (say, if i don't want to use the phone feature, just want my mp3 player and camera?) i think that's a better way of asking it...

do u want to work on ur phone and that without a sim card. FOR MOTOROLA! well i have a guide to this! check it out:- What You Do: 1. open P2K Advanced Editer and connect phone 2. click connect in P2k Mode 3. go to Phone Services> SEEM Functions> SEEM 4a. in the menu at the top. 4. now in the filter box write sim and click find 5. click read from phone 6. in the top there should be something called SIM_ENABLED_PHONE 7. click it and the Dec should be to 1. if it is change it to 0 8. click write to phone 9. remove sim and restart phone ( no sim should be in while phone turning on) Now you can use the phone without a sim, play games, camera etc.
