When you capitalize God you are acknowledging that it is a proper noun, giving respect to him. If you choose not to capitalize god, it can be seen as disrespectful. I'd assume when saying things like "omg" you wouldn't be expected to say "omG" but when specifically referring to a deity of a specific religion you should capitalize it just to be safe.

God refers specifically to one god, which you can consider either the name or the title. Either use, God is spelled with a capital "G". However, god or gods (lower case "g") doesn't refer to a specific god or title for that god.
-
Conventionally we write God with a capital G. If someone wrote God as 'god' using a small 'g' you must excuse the mistake. I see both usages as acceptable as the spell check in my PC does not highlight 'god' as a spelling error.

Your God is a capital G. Everyone else's god has a small g.

Although it is the same word, many Bible translators use "God" when referring to the one that Jesus referred to as "the only true God" and of which Paul said that to us (Christians), there is one "God". But other places uses "god" rather referring to a false god such as baalzebub (2Kings 1:16)http://bible.cc/2_kings/1-16.htm or referring to ones serving in a position of a god such as the judges in Israel. (Psalms 82:6) . Not all translators hold to that, and some also have different interpretations as to who the "only true God" is. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Cor8:5-6;John17:3;Psalms%2082:1-6;Psalms82:1-6;%20John10:34;&version=49;15;77;16;51; . Here is another example of where most translators use God and god. http://bible.cc/psalms/82-1.htm

"god" is everyone else's evil, deceptive false idol that must be eradicated from the earth by any means possible. "God" is my personal real god that, while possibly sharing many similarities with those other "gods" is the one true, real one that must be worshipped and respected above all those fake ones...
