Hmm... I dont thnk the child should be punished... aren't they super young when this is supposed to occur? I think sometimes we take the bible and other works of God too literally. I believe it is all up for interpretation. Isn't that why we have free will?

In the Old Testament of the Bible, children always inherit the "sins of the father" (and mother). Sad, but true.

It would have been unthinkable for a Jew of that time not to have circumcised his son, seeing as this was part of the covenant that ABraham made with God. If, by some strange reason, the child was not curcumcised, it meant that the parents had chosen for their family to be NOT part of Israel, hence the child being rejected. Ask nevets about it today. Jews would still feel the same way about circumcision. An uncircumcised Jew is not a Jew.(the idea of choice that you put in your question is a very modern one...people did not think about choice in the same way...people were societal, not individualists. that is a relatively modern phenomenom, mainly found in western societies still to this day)
