As near as I can ascertain: Jewish folks have scriptures that denote Jews as 'God's Chosen People". Many coat tail riders- such as Christianity and Islam, would like to have the endorsement of "the Chosen People". And since the Jews consistently refuse to see "the truth", religious arrogance allows the refused to justify attacking them. And besides, Jews work hard, and tend to be a success. Success breeds contempt from those who feel that all the blessings belong to those who worship the "proper" way without actually having to work for it.

The Jews have historically faced problems throughout the world and throughout history for much the same reasons that Gypseys have: they move in among an alien society but never fully assimilate to it. Even ancient sources from all over the Near East in the 3rd Millennium BC complain of the blight of the Habiru (Hebrews) among them. The problems that come about between such peoples is that the Jewish employer expects his employees and those he trades with to look out for themselves and vociferously and adamantally speak up for their own interests while the western European workers expected something more partriarchal and vendors & customers expected something more neighborly and polite. Also when a man from an agrarian society (especially a Christian agrarian society) says, "can you lend me ..." he means "can you do me a favor" while the Levantine (Greeks, Phoenicians, and many Turks as well) understands it as an investment that he expects to be paid back and with interest. Also, rural folk, no matter how much land and livestock they have, and how full their barns, tend to be quite poor in specie, which is what the city merchants and usurers insisted on paying with and being paid in, so the country-folk had to keep hocking their possessions just to borrow cash to pay back what they owed, cash which they'd have to pay back at interest, so they'd have to hock even more of what they still had left, creating a viscious cycle. Also, while Jews tended to be comparatively tight and hardnosed in business dealings while western Europeans were "neighborly" and generally thought it in poor taste, de-classe, and un-chivalric to haggle over money (their barbarian heritage still valued "magnamity" - i.e., "being blase about wasting money"), Jews like other Levantines tended to be far more generous in personal matters, even to shirt-tail relations, making gifts that western Europeans saw as showey, ostentatious, and in poor taste. Compare the typical haul of a Jewish boy at his Bar Mitzvah compared with what the typical WASP gets at his Confirmation (typically a Bible or prayer book with his name engraved on it and, if a girl, a pretty communion dress). An Eastern European and Levantine wedding typically involves the whole village making gifts that set the young couple up in life completely while the western European believed a man shouldn't get married until he could afford a house and household himself, and it was an insult to offer/give him money to do so. Even at my own wedding, my father's Jewish lawyer, an old Jewish friend who'd been his chief salesman 30 years before, and his chief Jewish investor each gave me *sizable* cash gifts by envelope at the reception in addition to the already extravagent gifts they'd sent, while the best we got from my waspish relatives and oldest family friends (all quite wealthy) was the typical fine china plate or silver fork. The silly old suburbanite matrons of course saw the former as ostentation: I knew better - our Jewish friends really understood how to celebrate and what to celebrate and did so from the bottom of their hearts and thus also the bottom of their wallets. It also was common (and still is) for Jews (and Greeks, and Chinese, and Koreans) to set-up friends and relatives in business - something unthinkable in traditional western bourgeois waspish culture. (When I was trying to raise money to start a business, not only could I not ask my own father for help, a loan, or an investment, when I sold my stock in his own company to him to raise the capital he insisted on pocketing what would have been the commission had I sold it on the open market.) Now there's nothing wrong with either culture, but when cohabitating there was naturally much misunderstanding, irritation, and resentment. And as Jews tended to come out with the long end of the stick in business trades and negotiations, and pooled their resources more effectively, there was a lot of suspicion as well as resentment and animosity against them. Others will make a big deal out of the charge of deicide in western Europe, but this was just a little extra gasoline that was added to an already burning fire. The cause there was socio-economic and cultural, not theological. In the Middle Ages the Christian bishops (fellow city-dwellers with the Jews) in fact were usually the great protectors of the Jews against the rural masses and nobility. As for the Middle East, though the Koran rebukes the Jews for their rejection of "Messiah Jesus" and consigns them to 2nd Class status within Islamic society (along with the Christians) for not being Moslems, they managed pretty well among fellow Levantines (Christian and Moslem as well as Jews) until Zionism started establishing a beach-head in Palestine after World War I, and after 1947 they became "the enemy" to be driven into the sea. Interestingly, you don't find Jews in East Asia -- they can't compete with the Chinese, or at least don't want to. (The Chinese are generally hailed as "the Jews of Asia".) Asian culture being authoriatarian, though, violence against the Chinese was almost always "private" - usually in dark alleys, though there were occassional mob riots against them. But the aristocracy were utterly in bed with the Chinese merchant class - litterally as well as figuratively - and so there was rarely any government action against them. It would have been rather difficult since the Chinese really were the government, providing the bulk of their civil servants as well as their financiers. But unlike the Jews, Chinese merchants were not accompanied by Chinese wives, and so they always took local spouses. Their children, however, would only be wed to the aristocrats, new Chinese male arrivals, or the half-Chinese children of other local Chinese merchants. This way, they'd only half-assimilate, maintaining a semi-Chinese identity for centuries. And such old animosities against them remain even today, however moderated. In Thailand today there's still the expression that translates basically as "thieving Chinese bastard". In an adult language class I was teaching, they asked me about my wife's work, and I said that she had worked as a manager for a small Thai business but that there had been some difficulties - attempting to explain, I offered simply, "Well the owners were very good people but ... well ... they're Chinese shopkeepers ..." - and that was all I needed to say! INSTANT COMPREHENSION as well as sympathy from each one of my Thai students. ADDENDUM - I almost forgot the Biblical answer: It's part of God's sovereign plan that his chosen people should be (1) a nation of priests proclaiming the Glory of God to the nations, (2) strangers in a strange land, (3) something of a cosmic whipping boy for the sins of man (just like His Messiah - but that's a Christian addition). The job of the People of God is to be the yeast in the dough - an infiltrating and transforming agent working to establish justice, mercy, and compassion. As is the case with the true Christians, doing that sort of thing can make you very unpopular with the worldly.
