  • I think hairstylists are the only ones that would.
  • r u kidding me!!
  • she gets $15 for 15 minutes of work. I think she gets quite enough without the tip.
  • did you know that you can style your own hair?
  • I get a 16.00 dollar hair cut and I tip 2.00 for each so I guess I am about right. I always have done that for me and my kids and the hubby if he is there too. Course I have to like the cut too - otherwise I don't.
  • i always tip the barber $5 regardless of price.
  • are you a hair stylist? the hair stylist sets her own prices. she should be smart enough to add the tip herself. the only reason she wouldn't do it is because she thinks that people would never pay that much for her services, which is why she shouldn't expect that much of a tip. but, i'm a sucker. i always tip a lot.
  • No way. I look at the price list and expect to pay what is written there. I can barely afford that so I don't tip. If I did, I would never be able to afford their service at all. I also work in a service industry and no one tips me. And I don't expect it! Maybe if I began getting tips I would be able to pass it along? But I will bet you never tipped me or anyone in this industry. For those of us who are barely scrapeing by a 20% tip can break us. If you want 20% on top of the actual price, add it to the price and I will know up front that I can't afford you.
  • Yes they deserve it!!!
  • yes and I tip mine more than 20%- she will fit me in at a moments notice!
  • I usually tip $5 for a $50 haircut. My hair is pretty simple...just an angled bob. I'll give $10 if the stylist does and extra extra good job or gives a good scalp massage.
  • Well, I do except in this case. I went to a new salon that opened and I knew it would cost more than usual because, for one, my hair was past my butt; so I took $125.00 cash with me and nothing else. I got up to leave and when I asked how much they said $125.00!! I almost fell on the floor. I couldn't give a tip because they charged me so much money, I didn't have any left. That was the one and only time I went there. They closed shortly thereafter.
  • Actually, I had no idea. But, I've never been to a hair salon. Hell, I haven't even had a trim in over 11 years. But, I've seen advertisements for salon services, and the price always has an asterisk next to it - "Long hair extra". So, I, with my 3 1/2 foot long hair, could go into a salon, get a ridiculously jacked price because of that happy little asterisk, and then you'll want 20% ON TOP OF THAT? No, thanks.
  • Ahhh no! It costs enough as it is, if they want more money they should just add it to the price!
  • This must be in America! That is the only place where they charge for a service and then EXPECT to get a tip as well. I have never and will never pay a tip for a service that I have already paid for. So no, I didn't know that you were supposed to tip your hairstylist at least 20% of the total service price. That is robbery.
  • Yes I knew that, I thought everyone did.
  • Actually, I had no idea. I've never done that, ever.
  • I have only been 2 or 3 times and I always tip about 50 bucks.
  • 20 bucks for a haircut???? the freakin tip is included!
  • I thought tip is voluntary. If it's required, why don't simply add 20% or whatever service charge to the bill?
  • I follow the 20% practice...and sometimes more if everything has gone well and the service has been particularly pleasant. I admit, I'm given to being excessive insofar as tippings, since I feel they are working reasonably long and tedious hours...and need those tips to maintain a decent living. At least they are not sitting home on their butts drawing welfare. I even tip folks working in fast food places...but that's just me. +5
  • I tip but I never new it was suppose to be 20% I will give 10-15% if they do a good job. Do they make less than minimum wage like waitresses?
  • Unless she owns the business.
  • Not here in Australia do we tip hairdressers. I don't usually tip anyone, maybe the restaurant if it was an outstanding meal...
  • There's no "supposed" about it. Tips are there to show appreciation for good service, in other words they're earned, not something automatic.
  • The amount of money it costs for me to get my hair done there days makes it a real treat for me! The prices to get a cut and blow dry are astronomical and that's before I consider a colour etc. I think I pay quite enough for the service and any tips should be of my choosing - who are you to tell me what the gratuity *should* be? It *should* be a tip for extraordinary service; above and beyond the expected; I expect a good job, I expect your attention whilst you have scissors near my head - you'll have to do something pretty amazing for me then to hand over an extra 20% on top because you think I should!
  • Um, yeah.............about that. I have my hair done every 8 weeks........used to be every 6 weeks until the economy went to crap. Oh well, I also tip if I am happy w/ the service........it is a choice.......not REQUIRED. I will tell you that my stylist works in one of the best salons in the city and their business has been cut in half....so I am quite sure that my stylist is happy to have a paying customer....otherwise she would be out of a job. I spend about 3 hours w/ her and pay a LOT of money to have my hair done, so I expect great service......that is what I am paying for. A tip is for 'above and beyond' service.
  • i usually give them 5 bucks.
  • I am 47 years old and never tipped anyone ever. they get paid to do a job and thats it. It is not normal practice where I live to tip anyone.
  • i didnt know that. well i live in iceland.. theres no tip here... just the usual price and then leave.
  • GADS what planet are you from? 20%...who made that rule!!! I am a retired hairdresser/makeup artist and any tip I got I appreciated, whether it was $1 or $10..and the $10 didnt come very often!! I think any amount that is given in appreciation is enough...and it also depends on the income of the people being served!!! I had little old ladies who I know didnt have much, but they gave me $1 and I was grateful and told them so....of course, this was back in the 1970's!!! but I hate 'rules' for tipping...who made them, why are they followed, and why not give what you feel is best? no one should complain about a tip, no matter how small it is!!!!!!
