At least two ways that I can think of; for starters, they have no water because they are essentially in a desert. Also, I'm sure it makes life difficult to be hemmed in by the race of people you despise and who hate you as well with your back to the sea.

They are connected to the Mediterranean Sea and the red Sea at the Gulf of Aqaba. The Jordan River acts as an eastern barrier at places and is the life of Israeli agriculture. Parts of culture are similar to Greece because of the Mediterranean climate and proximity to their neighbors. They are the only Asian Country which actually borders on Africa via Egypt. Strategically speaking, they live in one of the most important territories in the world.

several ways to look at this. lets go with geography and not demographics... Syrian - African divide makes the land susceptible to may earthquakes. The middle eastern location provides lots of desert land and little fertile land. The scarcity of water affects all inhabitants. The land is quite small but has great importance to all religions making it a disputed land with many wars.
