I like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. I think he led the way for Sean Penn.

While I think Dustin Hoffman is a superb actor, I think Sean Penn's portrayal of "Sam" was a bigger stretch for his abilities, and he gets my vote out of these two roles.
-
Sean Penn. He never played a pole like that before. He should have won an Oscar!
-
I will go with Sean Penn. Five minutes into the movie and I forgot it was Penn. He was absorbed by that role, totally immersed in it. Hoffman was great in Rain Man, and excellent in “Runaway Jury”. Russell Crowe was also nominated that year 2002 for “Beautiful Mind” Here was the field: 74th Oscars, 2002 BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind" Sean Penn in "I Am Sam" Will Smith in "Ali" Denzel Washington in "Training Day" Tom Wilkinson in "In The Bedroom" Washington won. Uggggh. A good actor, but for that role? I have seen 4 good performances from Washington since then, but Penn should have gone home with the Oscar that year.

Dustin Hoffman in Rainman.
-
Dustin Hoffman, in one of the only roles I ever liked him in, (besides Papillon).
-
I'd have to say Sean Penn. Any actor that can start out his career portraying a stoner surfer dude to a mentally challenged single parent is tops in my book!
-
Dustin Hoffman over-all, but Sean did rock that role.
-
Dustin Hoffman by a country mile. Sean Penn is a good actor, but he just not Dustin Hoffman.
