Etiquette depends a lot upon context. When "dining with the queen" the polite guest does as the queen does, and the queen uses a knife and fork. But in most contexts it's find to use your hands. Just don't wipe the jelly from your fingers onto your pants, that's never polite.

Speaking as an upper crust Brit with a pinky that sticks out all by itself - hands! Some things were just made for sucking off your fingertips, and the butter from a hot crumpet is one example. :-)

Bare hands, because then you can eat more than one at the same time!!!!

knife, fork, spoon, hand... which ever is available at the moment

When served like toast .. eat with your hands. Obviously if they are used for a base for something messy ... knife and fork
