Some of my cats understand more words than others but some get talked to more than others. The cat who is closest to me probably understands about 20-25 spoken words, maybe a few more, Some words I started spelling like C-H-E-E-S-E but she eventually figured that out too.

a lot of words ~ they all respond to their names. i have also trained them to understand "yum yums" or "treats" as food. they also recognize "nip nip" ~ they come running for their catnip. one kitty loved chicken livers and would look at me intensely if i ever said "liver". some of them know the word "tuna" (i will give them tuna water on occasion). they most definitely understand the word "no". all my cats know what "birdies" are ~ their eyes get big when i say it and theyll head for the window or door. they know "wanna go outside?" they all like it when i say "good boy" or "good girl" and will purr in response. but i realize they are probably also responding to my voice inflection. they become alarmed and/or sheepish when i say "bad boy" and "bad girl". lastly, i think they understand "come" as well, although whether they come is completely dependent on their moods. they are cats, after all. :D
