  • In the old days when people listened to wireless sets, broadcasts were selected by turning a knob connected to what was called the tuning capacitor. In those days you tuned in to the station you were interested in. When commercials disrupted the flow of a programme the natural response was to tune in to other stations to find out what was going on, anything to avoid listening to the commercials. This had the effect of taking away listeners and announcers would say things like 'Stay tuned (in): after the break we have . . .'
