A good one that is a little older and I think most wouldn't recommend is Gallipoli, you just have to get over the cheesy soundtrack. Mel Gibson in his younger days.
-
Nobody has mentioned "Full Metal Jacket", I can't believe that! That is about the only war film I really liked. Also "Good Morning Vietnam" is excellent, although it isn't really a war film in the same way as most of the others mentioned in the sense that fighting is not the focus of the plot.
-
Glory, is a good one for the civil war Tora Tora Tora- is kind of borning but a good one to watch on WWII.
-
I do not watch many “war movies” but one that I did was “All Quite on the Western Front”. This 1930 classic film was based on Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel. It starred Lew Ayres. It won the 1930 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. The film was years ahead of its time, very edgy. It does not glorify war or romanticize it. Although not at all gory, it was disturbing. I can not believe that no one else mentioned this one.
-
Thin Red line, good cast/plot and a bit of a different take on the traditional war film.
-
"Band of Brothers" series has just about everything you'll want in a war movie. If you like video games "Call of Duty" seems to go hand in hand with it.
-
"Jarhead" is a really good recent one.
-
Great Escape!
-
Deerhunter and Paths of Glory top my list.
-
Killing Fields, Band of Brothers, To Hell and Back, The Longest Day, ToraToraTora, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Green Beret, Blackhawk Down, Bridge Over River Kwai, Red October, Where Eagles Dare, PT-109,Big Red One, and some others I cant remember the title to.
-
full metal jacket
-
Band of brothers !
-
Forest Gump. I know it isn't completely about war, but it does show the sadness & sometimes ridiculousness of war. Forest has a naieve outlook on the whole thing.
-
Saving Private Ryan. My uncle was there on D-Day. He never spoke of his experiences until after the movie came out. He told us all how it was. The movie was extremely accurate.
-
war of the worlds its not a real movie like thing its computerized but i loved it and can watch it again and again
-
Lord of the Rings are the best war movies. If you want "historical" war movies, then U571, Saving Private, and Blackhawk Down are some good ones.
-
saving private ryan.. and band of brothers..
-
Black Hawk Down I've heard is good....although I can't watch it. Have known/know too many people fighting overseas right now... But Saving Private Ryan as good and We Were Soldiers, as well as The Patriot.
-

These are all great war movies. But, I need to ask...Is there such a thing as a GOOD war movie. Anyhow, I thought that "Letters from Iwo Jima," and "Flags of Our Fathers" were both excellent, also. Probably "Saving Private Ryan" and "We Were Soldiers" are the best for showing the true horror of war.
-
Star wars...
-
30 Seconds Over Tokyo (oldie but goodie) Apocalypse Now The Deer Hunter Full Metal Jacket Bridge Over the River Kwai
-
Platoon is the best one that I have seen. Watch the documentary after the movie it is awesome. The director based the movie off of his experience in Vietnam.
-
Saving Private Ryan We Were Soldiers The Longest Day Hamburger Hill All four of those are excellent movies and very realistic, as movies go. Apocolypse Now was a disgusting and totally innacurate portrayal. Platoon and The Deer Hunter weren't totally bad, but were also very innacurate.
-
Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter
-
Ran
-
None.. War is horrible..
-
The Deer Hunter and Glory.
