Why can't CFL lights be made mercury-free? Isn't there an environmentally-friendlier mercury substitute?

Sorry, it's physics. . Anything else that fluoresces like mercury is going to be just as toxic. . We might be able to switch to those ultrabright LEDs. At least they're not fragile. .
