You can, but in my esperience that does not work best. Best: slide an "egg weitht" over your line; tie on a swivel; tie on a monofilament leader line (about as long as the fish you expect to catch); tie on a hook (appropriate to the expected fish and commensurate bait). This allows the line to slide thru the weight so you can feel the bite good. Son and I caught a lot of fish today rigged this way. This assumes bottom fishing, of course, and inshore. Offshore, in real deep water, I put the weight on the bottom, but don't use live bait for offshore, bottom fishing.
