  • When the person who died was a nasty piece of work, and that he was was agnowladged by a majority of people .. i.e "fortunately, Hitler passed away."
  • The one time I could consider it fortunate is if someone was suffering from incurable cancer. This happened to my mother, it's more painful to see someone who can't be helped.

  • Dunno, its all in perspective. I guess if there is no after life and the person was loved, it might always be unfortunate from that point of view. If there's an afterlife, perhaps it is always or at least sometimes fortunate, depending on where the person goes? People might not put it that way because we are selfish (and I don't mean selfish in a bad way).

  • People saying that are expressing some feelings of grief. If they would say something like: "I knew X, He passed away." they might get the message across but not how they feel about it.
  • When Saddam Hussein died it was not unfortunate.
  • Did you know that the president gets paid until he dies? It will be fortunate when GW passes on, then we won't have to keep paying him for his shoddy 8 year stint as president.
