Do you feel it's necessary to leave a comment if you're giving someone points for someone answering your question if you're simply going to say "Thanks _______"?

Yep, but I try to comment with something related to the answer and/or question, too. It's only polite, after all, and lets them know I read and appreciate their answer. ;-)

Only if I've interacted with that user before or if I have a comment to make about their answer. Like you, I could leave a big comment without worry but a new user usually gets the "Thank you +" unless their answer was noteworthy and I have more to say that isn't personal. :)
