because their own insecurities, somehow they seem to think in their own mind that it makes them look better.......but we all know that it is childish

Jealousy, and their own inability to come to terms with someone actually being happy. In my experience, at least. Close-mindedness too can cause this in situations where you may be in a "different" relationship; the rumor-mongerer is unable to accept a relationship that falls outside the constraints of conventional "dating" (i.e. large age difference in either direction, homosexual relationships et al.).
