Does anyone else feel that the viewed comments aren't “gray enough” in the comment list? (lacking contrast with new comments)

New comments, on the FEEDBACK page, have an orange NEW in the left column. Is this where you're talking about? I have never noticed a difference between read and non-read comments except for that NEW flag. The only things I've seen where BOLD and REGULAR are used to distinguish one type from another is the WATCH LIST, where YOUR questions are bolded, and others' questions you've asked to watch (get emails for) are in regular font.
