  • They vary quite a bit ... we have seen a few small galaxies that barely measure 40,000 light years across ... we have also seen big galaxies that span over 400,000 light years across ... our own galaxy is just under 100,000 light years across.
  • Our Milky Way Galaxy is approximatley 100,000 light years across. A light year is the distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1 year which equals 5.88 trillion miles.
