Spot toning/reducing is a myth. The only way to truly tone down a certain body part is to lower your overall body fat percentage. This is true especially in the case of abs. If you really want to get defined, chiseled abs you've gotta get that body fat percentage waay down. A good way to do this would be to run or swim as well as do you ab exercises. Have alook at some resources on abdominal exercises. There are some good tips and they go into the different methods used to get rock hard abs. http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/conditioning/a/aa020402a.htm http://www.changingshape.com/exercise/strengthtraining/abdominalcrunch.asp

I second the fact that you need overall body fat reduction by running, etc. in order to lose fat in the abdomen. The good news is that by doing overall body exercises, you'll also working the muscles in your stomach - sit ups/crunches are great, but unless you lose that weight you won't be able to see the great muscles you've toned underneath!

Nittany and davoomac are correct! I have talked with many nutritionists and personal trainers. You have to reduce your overall body fat. You can do lots of ab workouts and still not have toned and defined abs because of a fatty diet. The thin layer of fat covers the ab muscles. So you have to drink nothing but water. This means no soda or beer. Next, you have to quit candy and other high sugar foods. (You pretty much have to take away any food or drink that gives you any pleasure ... this is why most of my friends who are huge muscular gym rats usually end up being emotional babies. This is because they are constantly punishing their body and eating a strict diet.) Just making those two changes to your diet will reap results within six weeks without making you too cranky.
