I've never seen this usage before, but I suspect the reference is to an email 'client'. That is, the program that you use to write and read emails. If you use a web-based email client such as Yahoo!, HotMail or GMail, then your browser would be the client application, through the portal provided by the domain owner. Other email clients include Lotus Notes, Banyan Vines, Thunderbird, and of course Microsoft Outlook, for some examples.
