It is generally on a scale of 0 to 5. A wine with a 5 will be a very very sweet wine, and goes with certain foods "better". A wine with a 0 score will not be sweet at all, and has its own food that it goes well with. Some people just prefer the taste of a certain # of wine for the sweet/dry factor and will drink it with any meal, but that is where sometimes someone will claim that it tastes different - since it reacts with the food particles in your mouth and it alters the taste of both the wine and the food.
