Can anyone think of a fun way to explain natural selection to children? possibly using candy?

    How about this:

    "Here's a bag of mixed candies. There are a bunch of different types. Your mom puts the bowl on the table at a party, and the kids take whatever kind they like best.

    "Then, when the bowl is half empty, she throws it away and refills it with only the kinds that the kids ate the most of.

    "They dig in again, selecting only their *very* favorites. When it's half gone, she throws it away and refills with only the best.

    "That's how natural selection works, except that you don't have a bunch of kids barfing on the rug afterward."
