In layman's terms, what is "Aether"?

when a pebble is dropped into water, it causes a disturbance, seen as waves. when something vibrates in the air it causes a disturbance, experienced as sound. so that's regular waves and sound waves... what about light ? Aether is the name for the "material" lightwaves move through. like air for sound. such a thing has not been discovered and to my knowledge, is no longer relevant as light doesn't behave like a proper "wave" but it semi-wave semi-particle. need elaboration ?
