In Greek mythology, what were "Gorgons"?

The Gorgons were three sisters Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa, daughters of Phorcys. Preistesses in the temple of Athena, they were turned into monsters after Medusa enraged Athena. more can be found here: http://www.arthistory.sbc.edu/imageswomen/papers/kottkegorgon/gorgons.html

I would like to point out that in recent games (D&D and Heroes of Might and Magic) somehow the creators have gotten confused on this point. They list Medusas and gorgons as separate creatures. They get the Medusa's description correct, but they describe the gorgon as something that look like a bovine. Where they got this I don't know. Medusa was a gorgon. In this respect, these games serve to confuse people who don't know Greek mythology.
