To become so akin to solitude that it feels that you can speak with it may be a dangerous sign of being alone for far too long without human contact.

One of the main reasons, definately. Another one way up there would be, the ignorance of causes of - and therefore, divine ascription to - natural phenomena. . And of course, there's the: "My void is better than your void!"... "Nu Uh, my void can shoot thunderbolts up your void's butt!"... "Okay okay, your void wins, don't behead me!"

"Utter terror and loneliness" may well be one reason that people see God in the unknown, I don't know, but in my experience there is a different reason, and that is a sense of being cared for and living in a world of great beauty and love.
