If a building is on fire, and you make more fire, would it be considered making the fire worse or better?

I'm no expert, but I have heard that sometimes making the fire bigger can actually cause the fire burn out faster since more of the limited supply of oxygen would be consumed by the larger fire as long as it was in a confined area.
