  • The problem is that Alcohol is a very high calorie substance itself. That is why pure Alcohol will burn. Alcohol is a by product of glycolysis, the process used by cells (Usually yeasts) to digest sugars in an anerobic (Zero Oxygen) environment. In a side note: If you consume enough Alcohol, for a long enough period of time, your cells will adapt to using Alcohol preferentially instead of glucose to make ATP, which is what provides the chemical energy your cells require to be alive. Then if you suddenly quit consuming Alcohol you will get the 'DTs' and even possibly die because your metabolism has become addicted! If you remove the calories you consume as alcohol from your diet you will not gain weight. It is important then to ensure that you get enough vitamins and other nutrients. Working out wouldn't hurt either as you would consume the extra calories.
  • Check out this site that lists the lowest calorie drinks compared to how much alcohol they have: http://www.getdrunknotfat.com/ For instance you are better off drinking Coors Light than Bud Light.
  • 8-14-2017 A 12-ounce glass of beer has about 150 calories, a 5-ounce glass of red wine has about 125 calories, and a 1.5 ounce shot of gin, rum, vodka, whiskey or tequila has about 100 calories, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
