Why do some Christians claim that Abstinence is 100% effective, when one of the major figures of the religion is the result of a virgin birth?

I would have to say that it is because christians do not believe that anyone alive now could be pure enough for God to consider them to give birth to his sacred children.

I am a Christian and I don't feel that way. I believe educating is the best way! Understand that the new testament was written to educate as well and one must understand the reasoning behind what was written. Of course abstinence is effective, but how realistic is abstinence? Remember, Mary was married to Joseph, so in the sense it was right by marriage to make a child, so in that sense Jesus was a figure of purity.
