Grant was the best general in the end if for no other reason than that at no time did he allow himself to be beaten. If he lost a battle, he came back harder and stronger. That being said, I wonder how long the war would have lasted if Lee had felt a deeper attachment to his home country than his home state. I can't help thinking the war would have been over much sooner. Not only would his loss have weakened the South and strengthened the North, he was an influential enough individual that many other generals would have followed his example.

Edward C. Walthall

Robert E. Lee is supposed to have been the better general seeing as Lincoln asked him to be a general for the Union before he asked Grant but he was too late and pride is a bi$%h. but, in the end, i guess Grant just got lucky. From what i've read Grant was supposed to have been mal-kept, an avid drinker and generally disgruntled while Lee was supposed to have been pretty neat, orderly, and respected. Good thing the south lost, but i still think the south had a better general.

Gen. Stonewall Jackson

General Sherman ended the war with minimal loss of life compared to Grants stalemate with Lee on the eastern front. So I would say William T. Sherman for the Union and Robert E. Lee for the South.

Ulysses S. Grant. He won.

Stonewall Jackson, he was the reason Lee won the early battles. Lee never won a major one after Jackson was killed. Hard to say Grant wasn't as good though.

Lee was a genius of combat far superior to U.S. Grant But Grant had an unlimited amount of supplies and men compared to the vanquished C.S.A Blockade runners could not keep the C.S.A. supplied with food or arms~it was a disaster after the battle of Gettysberg....the high water of the C.S.A
