What do you think of Jerry Lee Lewis when he married his 13 year old 2nd cousin? I think he was 21 at the time.

Personally i think it was a little weird, then again his career did go down hill after he married her...

Wasn't it actually a third cousin? Sister to his drummer or another band member. Still, disturbing. Didn't change my opinion of his music, but that was one wacked out dude.

The relationship between them wasn't the problem. It was her age and the fact that he had neglected to divorce his former wife. However, should we really be surprised? After all, he did come from the backwoods, where things were a lot more relaxed (cough) than in the big cities.

In many parts of the south at that time & before, it wasn't unusual for girls to marry between 12 & 15, Loretta Lynn was 13 as well. Marriage to an older man was thought to settle girls into wives & mothers while they were still 'flexible'.
