  • This is mostly a matter of finger strength -- you have to be able to press the strings hard enough so that they clamp down against the frets without "buzzing". It's worse when playing a chord, because you have to clamp more strings, which requires more strength. Guitar players need strong fingers and thick callouses, all this comes with time and practice.
  • another thing to check is if the action on your strings is too low. that means that the strings are hitting the frets between the ones you play and the pick up. so press down on a single fret and make sure it's touching the neck and see if it buzzes. try that on all the strings and if any of them buzz then take it to a shop. if not, well then press harder haha. you'll get used to it eventually.
  • things to explore: 1) place your finger closer to the fret - just behind it 2) it shouldn't take monumental strength - try different ways of holding the guitar to get better positioning 3) get a professional set-up (about $50) -- to get the guitar properly adjusted -- needs to be done once or twice a year due to temperature changes -- and it's a good idea to have the set-up checked at purchase time.
