I couldn't find a specific answer to your question, but did find some excellent info about the history of Scotch tape here: http://www.3m.com/brands/scotch/anniversary/images/ScotchHistoryFinal.pdf The US patent office only keeps online records for patents that were registered from 1976 to present so it won't be any help.

The inventor was a 3M engineer called Richard Drew and he invented it in 1930,but it was not known as Scotch tape then.The Scotch brand came years later. Not a very clear copy but here the patent.
