Do up a bill of sales (even if only for 10 dollars), have the registration signed over to you as the new owner (registration has this on the back of it), have it notorized (banks can perform this service), and take the car to your loval DMV (with registration and proof of insurance) and get it registered in your name. You can contact your local DMV for exact procedures to follow. Banks may also be able to advise, since they handle these types of transactions routinely. Ask one of the office clerks. Also, a car dealership can tell you the routine that must be followed. Once you have the registration signed over to you, the car is yours. Keep copies of everything for your records.
