I suppose that depends. "I promise to take you to dinner tonight" would. "I do" doesn't.

If a parent promises to send his child to college and the child comes back at age 40 and says make good on the promise, I would say it probably expired about 20 years ago.

It's a funny thing about promises, they only have value if the issuer upholds his/her word

Not a date, but when conditions change as such that the promise can't, or shouldn't (causing undue harm) be kept. If we keep a promise regardless of the consequences to others, merely because we must keep our word... we are thinking too much of self.
