All religions stem from some form of philosophical thought. Whether it is a nature religion centered around animism (spirits inhabiting natural objects like stones, trees, rivers, etc.) or the Judeo-Christian-Muslim concept of a single, all-powerful deity. At their very roots, all religions attempt to first understand and then pass along this knowledge of why things are the way they are and what purpose life holds. Down the road, dogma usually rears it's head and that's when things start getting confused and religion becomes politics.
