Not having enough money for the necessary things like food and shelter would be really poor in terms of monetary poor. I think you could be poor also if you couldn't show kindness and empathy toward your fellow man.

Poverty is a state of mind, and hard to overcome, since it requires an entire change of mind and attitude. And we know how much people often resist change, even good change. Being broke is something that most of us have been at one time or another; it's generally temporary, and not a life sentence.
-
Having very little of something. You can be poor in other things besides being monetarily poor.

When you go to bed hungry because there is no money for food When you suffer because you have no health insurance and can't afford to go to the doctor When you worry about being kicked out of your place because you lost your job, have no money to pay the rent When the utilities are shut off...when you get a knock on the door from a process server When you cry all night because your children are hungry, cold and afraid.

True poverty is the deprivation of common necessities that determine the quality of life, including food, clothing, shelter and safe drinking water. What we see in the US is most often "relative" poverty. Relative poverty views poverty as socially defined and dependent on social context. In other words, you might have plenty of food, shelter, clothing...but you don't have a car, tv or cell phone.

I think being poor is when, if you are lucky enough to have a house to live in, you still can't afford to have lights, phone, you have holes in the floor where you can see the dirt on the ground and your AC is a old metal fan, your curtains are made up with some sort of old sheet or rag. You can only get new clothes when you get hand me downs, you enjoy when your mom cooks beans that she spent all morning picking and shelling for you to eat and some chicken that she rung his neck and plucked the feathers and cooked for you. I think we take so much for granted in this day and complain about the economy and gas prices and so on but we need to be thankful if we have a home, lights, a job, the INTERNET, so many things we have to be thankful for. Poor isn't well I can't afford gas, if you have a car and you have money in your pocket no matter how little you need to be thankful.

Wondering every single day if you will have the means to survive. This is financial destitution. The truest sense of poor. Food stamps, if you are lucky. "Pride" being abandoned a long time ago because of the impulse for survival. The inability to get back up on your feet, no matter how much you try. The debt being an endless, abysmal black hole. Being poor is not just the inability to function among the amenities of normal life. Being poor seeps into the consciousness as a constant wrestling match with struggle, discomfort, adversity, and even personal failure - in the very worst of the impoverished scenarios. I would rather be rich on love, laughter, and a life well-lived than money - but being truly poor turns life into a constant battle to merely live.

There is a HUGE difference between being "poor" and being "broke". "Being poor" is a state of mind. It's the fact a person truly believes he or she will never amount to anything or have any money at all - from that day forward until the day he or she "goes to his or her reward" - dies. "Being broke" means a person doesn't have enough money at the present time and for the foreseeable future. In other words, there is more week, two weeks or month between the time the last dollar was spent and the time the next check or amount of money comes to that person. By the way: I've been broke PLENTY of times. I was never poor. Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it! VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name! Sources: My wonderful family!
