  • The value of metals is based on its rarity. The less there is, and the harder it is to find, determines the value based on Supply and Demand. The higher the demand for a metal in short supply will go to the highest bidder. Platinum is much more valuable than gold because there is much less of it and it is extremely hard to find and mine.
  • It's not just that there is less of it, it also has to do with the fact that it can be found it in its pure form. There are plenty of rarer elements but gold is found in hunks of gold, not mixed with other elements.

  • I think there are a bunch of reasons, including: 1) rarity 2) beauty 3) pure gold doesn't oxidize, so it's great for jewelry and electrical connections. 4) It's very maleable and can easily make extremely thin sheets without requiring annealing. 5) It's easy to work and has a relatively low melting point. 6) Alloys of gold and other metals are easy to make and can vary the properties greatly.
