Not paranoid. Just full of common sense.

The danger of that is largely dependent upon how well you know the interface of the site and how to use it. All of those sites have options to restrict and filter who sees your personal information. You can even create filters so that some people may only see your very basic information, or none at all. By being smart about how you use these sites, there is very little danger involved. It is when people post public profiles listing all of their information for all the world to see that is dangerous. It's unfortunate, but we simply can not afford to be complacent about being diligent with the safety of our information. It isn't enough to hope that your information doesn't land in the wrong hands.

you could make your site private that only your close friends and family can view it.

Sure, however, if you've spent time on those sites, you would see that they have privacy settings so people you don't know can't see your information. So its really your own fault if you allow people to see the information you give and yourself and your family. Although some of those sites you listed are more prone to being "hacked". Such as myspace... Just don't be one of those kinds of people who tries to shut these websites down though. They are already trying to do that with facebook, and there are millions of people on these sites, I wouldn't piss them off.
