Why do you think women who take maternity leave at some point in their career become less likely to get promoted than co-workers that don't need maternity leave?

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think it depends on how committed they remain to their jobs after they get back to work. Which seems fair enough to me.

Taking maternity leave only shows how devoted you are to every part of your life. I think they should consider your ability to do your job when it comes to a promotion, not the fact that some of your other priorities involve a family.

Because some employers are still living in the dark ages and believe that a woman will always sacrifice her career for her family and they don't want to give her a chance to prove them wrong. Sorry about the run-on sentence.
