  • Operationally it is the same calling. When the children sing "Follow the Prophet" they are speaking of the present, not just Joseph Smith. But historically Joseph Smith was one of a kind. He was the First Elder of the Church (and the only person so designated), he was the person called to restore authority and teachings, etc. John Taylor suggested that Joseph did more for the salvation of mankind than any save Christ and from a certain perspective that's true....there's a tendency to put him on a pedestal. Ultimately, it's just habit and custom, nothing more than that.
  • Great question. Perhaps referring to the LDS leader as 'prophet' on a normal basis would be a bit taboo in today's society. Even though this is considered the same in the LDS/Mormon church, it might be easier or more comfortable to members in outside circles and better public relations.
  • Yeah, but he was the 1st, right? Surely this carries a significance?
