  • I would say that LBJ knew what he was speaking about. Richard Nixon siezed that change in direction and it helped to propel him to power, esspecially after the shooting of George Wallace. Ever since 1968, the South, state by state, with very few exceptions, has gone to the Rebublicans. History pretty much shows this.
  • Lyndon Johnson was a renowned racist. He helped gut the original civil rights bill in 1957 as a Senator. He only signed the bill in 1964 for political expediency. He was barely able to convince enough Democrats in Congress to pass the bill. A higher percentage of Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than did Democrats.
  • Because he knew that the South was solidly against anything that would've empowered Blacks. Even nearly a hundred years after they lost the Civil War.
