Oooh. That's a really good question! I hope someone smarter than I answers it. I think it probably depends on the type of immigrant. Take for example the Scottish who were nicknamed the "invisible population" because, upon arriving in America they immediately assimilated into "American" society. You may not think they speak a different language but trust me, they do! At any rate by the third generation there's no more accent, and only a few words of the old dialect remain. Then there are other groups who keep themselves from assimilating and therefor hold on to their native customs and language much longer. I suppose you could count immigrants from many hispanic cultures among those (and this is not a judgement call!) that never stop speaking their home language.
