What exactly makes a war a "world" war? How many countries need to be involved?

I would think it would be at least 2 or 3, though it is also, in at least the mind of some, a thing of geography, for the distance between warring nations could be enough to merit said title.

It is a world war when two continents are involved.

I don't think there is a written rule on this, we just label them as they come.
