Since Tom, from Tom & Jerry and The cat in the hat, cat are already taken...my guess the most famous cat is the crazy cat off Alice in Wonderland...can't remember his name though...oops sry.:)

Never heard of your Simon, but have now read the article you linked here. Thanks. Have read through the other answers so far and many I might have said are already here! Ok, so I'll list those I might have said, then add another I haven't seen here yet: Felix the Cat Top Cat Tom (as in Tom and Jerry) And I'll add Sylvester .. as in Tweety and Sylvester. :)
