  • Actually... not by a long shot. While "A Bridge Too Far" has the advantage of being a true story (and an adaptation of Cornelius Ryan's awesome book), it lacks a 'reality' that "Saving Private Ryan" seems to possess in spite of its fictional nature. I've been shot at and you never forget the sound of bullets whizzing by you, while you hug the ground. "Saving Private Ryan" had that sound, "A Bridge Too Far" didn't. Hope this helps.
  • A bridge too far was a true story but they did Hollywood it up a bit. Saving private Ryan was based on a true story but the action sequences were much more realistic than any other war movie ever made. After serving in the Army I have no desire to watch a war movie. I have learned to detest violence and war because I studied history and know the true reasons behind them all. It does not entertain me seeing men killed and blown to pieces. It saddens me especially knowing what has gone on over the last few years in Iraq and now in Afghanistan. I have a dear friend leaving for the Stan in a few weeks.
  • They were much different movies in how the depicted war. A bridge too far was a movie about a failed strategic move late in the war. Saving Private Ryan was a personal story with the invasion as a backdrop. The movies showed war at the tactical level. This forced the two movies in vastly different directions and makes it hard to compare them because it depends on what you value in a war movie. I liked Saving Private Ryan better, mostly because the action was more intense. A bridge too far was a less intimate movie that way and because the outcome was a matter of history, there wasn't much suspense.
  • I have seen a Bridge too far - I have been to Arnhem, where the bridge was, and have been to Deventer where the movie was made (obviously they could not film it in Arnhem as the bridge was destroyed, and Deventer happened to have a very similar style of bridge) . I liked it. However I would not compare the two movies - both are very different in their treatment of the war - I like them both, but for very different reasons. (I prefer A Bridge Too Far though)
  • A Bridge too Far? A movie too long. A cast too large.
  • You can't compare they are so different. I would like to see a Bridge too Far with the Effects Private Ryan had the advantage off. Script is better for the Bridge but as for the actual picture. I give that to Private Ryan
