  • How about the game of Life? Wikipedia has a nice section on it.. From the site: "Setup The game consists of a track, on which players travel by spinning a small numbered wheel in the middle of the board. The board also contains small mountains, buildings, and other similar pieces, so the playing area does not appear flat. Playing pieces are small, colored plastic automobiles, and each pawn has six holes in the top in which "people pegs" are placed throughout the game as the player "gets married" and has or adopts "children". Each game also includes a setup for a bank, which includes imitation money (in denominations ranging from $1,000 to $100,000), insurance policies (automobile, life, fire, and/or homeowners' insurance depending on the version), $20,000 promissory notes, and stock certificates. Other tangibles vary with the game version. Gameplay Each player begins the game by choosing a plastic car, in which he/she builds his/her "family" throughout the game. Each turn consists of spinning a wheel with spaces numbered 1 through 10, and obeying the instructions of the space landed on, which are almost always related to some "real-life event". Such scenarios include births, marriage, natural disasters, job promotions, the stock market, and finally retirement. Dispersed throughout the board are "Pay Day" spaces; every time a player lands on or passes one of these, he/she receives his/her "salary" which is determined during the early stages of the game. The method of determining one's salary varied with the game format throughout the years. In all versions, any Promissory Notes accrued throughout the game must be paid back with interest - for every $20,000 note, $25,000 must be paid back to the bank to pay it off." • ummmmmmGuesstures!!! I effin love Guessturres! It's such a cool game and a 14 yr old would love it! [[I know I did]]
  • I have two suggestions: Stratego: An old capture-the-flag board game. You have little pieces labeled with numbers 1-9. 1 defeats 2-9, 2 defeats 3-9, etc. etc, and the spy (S) can defeat the 1. The point of the game is to attack your opponents flag. The catch is that all you see of your opponents army is their position, not their ranking. Very interesting game. Quickword: A very fun, but not very well known game. It's kinda like Scattergories. I would also suggest an old game called Rail Baron, but it is no longer being made. Try to find it on EBay.
  • If your looking for a family game I would suggest Scategories, outbrurst, or pictionary.
  • Settlers of Catan
  • Clue is one of my favorite games.

  • OTHELLO !!! Is much more interesting than its name. It is a board game than can be learned in a couple of minutes. Only takes a short while to play. Lots of fun and action. Teaches strategy. Anyone Six and over can play. There are also solo computer versions.
  • I second the nominations for Taboo and Cranium. I LOVE Cranium. Also check out Cranium Hoopla. Also check out... -Apples to Apples. It's clever. I can't describe it in words without sounding ridiculously nerdy, but it's kind of addictive...especially if you're playing with really funny people... -Imaginiff. It never gets old, because you can always choose new names to put on the board and new people to play with. -Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture and other DVD pop culture trivia games, like Scene It. I think some of the questions can be pretty hard (imho, it's partly because a ton of those movies are older than me and will be for your daughter), but they're pretty cool and a ton of fun anyway. Also, How To Host A Murder, even though each game can only be played once. They're a little risqué, but nothing a teenager doesn't see on TV or at school (sad world. anyways...). I think I actually hosted a HTHAM party for my 14th birthday. Hope this gets some more ideas running! Good luck!!!
  • whatev i wouldnt want a board game. Save the good samaritan thought for someone who cares.
  • Scrabble. its fun. its family oriented and it has a chep price. Be sure to buy the scrabble dictionary to avoid a homocide in your home.
  • Dont get the kid a board game, get her something cds or a Ps2 or something... Kids nowadays arent into to board games like they were in the 80's/90's.
  • Apples to Apples
  • TABOO - It is so much fun!
  • TABOO - It is so much fun!
  • Kerplunk and Mouse Trap (great games from childhood)
  • This card game called: Apples to Apples. It's very good. I'm 26 and we still play it during the holidays every year. Also it's age approiate for anyone you can read.
  • Personally i think most 14 year old girls are not gonna want to play board games anyway. Board games are fun when you are little kids and you start to grow into them again as an adult to remember your childhood. But most young teenagers have better (and more stimulating) things to do that hang around with their parents and play a boring game (which they all are). Sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear, but there's much better things you could get her.
  • Backgammon is a nice board game, skill and luck, doesn't take too long to play. And is a game she could play with her friends, both male and female. And the dice (luck) element is a great equalizer.
  • Pictionary, Scattergories, Scrabble?
  • Luck of the Draw is a pretty new game that has become a favorite around our house - A bit like Pictionary, but no need to draw well. All players draw the SAME subject - "house" for instance and then vote on the drawings in various ridiculous randomly drawn categories - "Silliest", "most embarrassing", or "didn't understand the subject" Anyone can play and its brutally funny - I found it at Barnes and Noble. It has won several game awards too.
