  • You can do either, which you do depends on the pattern you're following. There are all sorts of combinations.
  • It depends on what the outcome of the section is to be. A knit one purl one will produce ribbing, which is good for cuffs, bands etc. The knit one row, purl one row is used for the main part of the garment, because it is a looser weave.
  • You have to follow the instruction in the pattern you are using. The different combinations of those two stitches is how you create a project. The number of Knits and Purls you use in all spelled out in the pattern.
