  • Sinus lavage. It sounds gross and painful, it isn't. There are several methods. There is the chinese nasal pot, or you can get a specially made plastic squirt bottle. The one I use is made by Neil-med and can be bought at Walgreens or a number of other outlets. Kmart can order them for you. You must be certain that the water you use is sterile. My doctor recommends using distilled water, as it doesn't have any irritating minerals in it, or you can just boil a kettle of water and let it cool. You can either use premixed salt packets, or just add a half teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda with a full pot or bottle of water. Lean over the sink and rinse the bottle or pot through your nose, alternating sides. It is like gargling with salt water for your sinuses. As long as the water is body temp and you mix the salt properly, it doesn't hurt at all, in fact, it is very soothing. It rinses all the allergens, bacteria and what have you out of your sinuses, eases the drainage and gets rid of the pressure. If you are really stuffed up, do it very slowly and gently. Don't force the solution through. It will cause an ear infection if you do. Just rinse a little in and wait a while before doing it again. You'll get rid of a little each time until you can rinse it through properly. http://www.neilmed.com/usa/index.php This is my main means of defense against chronic sinusitis, now that I'm allergic to every antibiotic that doesn't cost $2000 a pop.
