Its caused by too many programs running i n the background, thus slowing the computer down and distorting any music playing. Try running less programs, or at least close any you aren't using (especially memory heavy ones like games) when you listen to music and this should sort it out. Good luck!

One, Windows Media Player isn't very multitasking friendly. Two you have way too many programs or services running in the background. Three, your hard drive may be busy serving up higher priority data for programs and ignoring your media files. Four, your hardware may be too old or running out of RAM; so please share your system specs and configuration with us, Then we'll be better able to help you resolve this matter. EDIT: An alternative, would be to convert your MP3s or music to .wav files; they take 0% CPU power to playback, freeing up your computer to do other things. However there is a trade off, it will consume more hard drive space and drive bandwidth. You can overcome this, by burning your .wav files to DVD and playing them back from the DVD drive. This will free up the hard drive to do other tasks. In the mean time try using songbird, VLC, or Media Player Classic. http://getsongbird.com/ EDIT: Last I checked, Songbird did have support for the iPOD. http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/12

Your windows media player uses more ram when loading and playing music even in the background. When you have other programes runnning too this creates a slowdown in the memory buffer access speeds and causeses a delay sometimes of up to 20 seconds to access files and programes when running them together.
