I would say the answer to that question varies from person to person, though I would like to believe most people would ask for altruistic reasons rather than for points.

If someone asked me to ask a question then I wouldn't be doing it for the points, I would be doing them a favor. The points are a bonus:)

You are helping other people and getting points. Some people are into the whole "point" thing. I don't understand it, but as far as I'm concerned, whatever floats your boat. +4

Can't it be both? Questions are the best way to get points after all, and I have such a hard time thinking of good ones.

Not mutually exclusive, IMO. Helping others as prime directive, motivation and even fun. Points as virtual currency for please, thank you, you're welcome. Informative ... enjoyable ... :)
